Ryan Reynolds remains hopeful that a Deadpool movie will be made, and so do the Zombieland collaborators who wrote the script. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick opened up about the test footage that director Tim Miller shot, and they’re over the moon at what they saw.

“We have a phenomenal director in Tim Miller, who did about a three minute test for Fox, and Ryan came in to do the mo-cap for it and the voice,” Reese told Collider. “And it’s like the greatest three minutes ever. I look at the three minutes and I’m like, ‘That’s the movie, and it has to get made.’ I think the biggest hurdle right now is convincing the-powers-that-be that it’s okay to have a hard-R rated movie within the Marvel Universe.”

That’s a problem Reynolds already opened up about, saying that Deadpool‘s rating is nearly NC-17. Reese said he hopes there’s some “tolerance for the outlier” and that “there has to be a tolerance for this one project that’s not like all the other Marvel projects.”

“Tony Stark and the hard-drinking, fast-talking billionaire was very different from all the other Marvel characters. And look what it became,” Wernick added, comparing Deadpool to Iron Man. “And we feel that way about Deadpool.”

When Reynolds was asked about the status of Deadpool, he said that Reese and Wernick gave the script a Zombieland-style tone. ” You could do it for a pittance compared to the modern sort of epic scale superhero movies, but it’s about a guy who knows he’s in a movie and knows he’s in a comic book who is deeply mentally disturbed and hyper violent. And that’s tough to get by a studio,” he said.
